I cried in my car this week. To be fair… I cry at puppy commercials, but these were stress tears. I know them well. I used to avoid them at all costs! But you can’t shove your emotions down forever. Turns out that’s not so good for you! 😉
I’ve done a lot of inner work over the years and one of the most important things I’ve learned is to never ignore your emotions for too long. Stressful emotions are loaded with information to help us grow. When we’re brave enough to listen, they can make us a better leader.
A lot of leaders struggle to feel their emotions because they don’t want to look weak. But there is a way to lead yourself through stress more intentionally while building resilience.
Here's how...
A few weeks ago I took on a new project and I'm a little overwhelmed. One night I was rushing home, late for dinner. I was upset that I was going to be late. It had been an intense day. The pressure had been building all day.
And then I felt the tears start to fall.
I let them fall.
I NEED them to fall.
I know this about myself.
It helps me clear my mind. It makes room for new ideas. It makes me a better person and a better leader.
So I allow myself to feel my emotions at a time and space that works for me.
If I don't take the time to process my emotions, I’ll start overthinking everything.
Nothing good happens when I start overthinking!
I know this about myself.
Another person might need to blow off some steam on the treadmill or lose themselves in a good journal. Everyone needs to have a way to release stress in their lives. Especially leaders who make decisions that impact people's lives!
It's important to find what works for you and to be INTENTIONAL about incorporating the practice into your life.
I trusted myself so I let the tears fall. But I didn’t waste the moment. I reflected on what I was feeling. I considered what I wanted and what I could do differently tomorrow. And then I let it go.
This is knowing how to lead yourself.
Our world needs more leaders who know themselves well.
Leaders who know how to take care of themselves so they can be there for others.
Leaders who know how important their energy is, so they can give their best every day.
Leaders who understand the impact of their choices and don’t let emotions cloud decisions.
We don’t become happy, successful leaders without doing the inner work.
I will continue to learn about myself because it makes me a better leader and a happier person. I challenge you to consider what you are learning about yourself too. It’s not only the key to leadership. It’s the key to living a happy life.
Good luck this week!
Nicky
